The Cherry Tree Cooperative is part of a National Cooperative of Sustainability, an initiative designed to establish a sustainable community through flexibility, across a network of cooperatives.
The Cheery Tree Cooperative, which is in Laksevåg, addresses the documented need for a better parental network, improved child mental and physical health, and better meeting places in the area.
The cooperative includes a children’s play area and community cafe. Children socially engage more readily than adults. Interaction between children naturally leads to interaction between parents. A number of shared facilities - library, study area, allotment gardens and launderette - also encourage greater interaction between residents.
The cooperative offers stability to families - flexible apartments can grow and shrink to accommodate changing circumstances. It is especially suitable for single-parent and multi-generational families. Single-parent apartments give the opportunity for shared common space between units, connecting families that can feel lonely and overwhelmed.
Students are housed in small flexi-flats between permanent residents, allowing this flexibility.
